Mississippi Elementary School Hand Washing Campaign

The Mississippi Elementary School Hand Washing Campaign is a collaboration between the Mississippi State Department of Health, Mississippi Department of Education, Mississippi Hospital Association, Greater Chapter of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control, and the Mississippi Nurses Foundation.

We are excited to work with school districts as an implementer of this great project. Annually more than 164 million school days are lost due to various illnesses. It is hypothesized that a great number of these days could be reduced if children merely washed their hands properly. To control student absenteeism due to communicable disease, proper hygiene practices will be promoted, with a special emphasis on hand hygiene, to elementary classrooms in Mississippi.

There are four lessons for the Hand Washing Program:

  1. Introduction to germs;

  2. Introduction to proper hand washing;

  3. ABCs of hand washing;

  4. How germs are spread.

All hand washing supplies are provided to the nurse for implementation of the hand wash program.
