$1000 Dr. Marcia Rachel Excellence in Leadership Award

Background:

Dr. Marcia Rachel was an amazing nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, Christian, educator, administrator, and a Mississippi Nurses Association Hall of Fame Inductee. She graduated from Mississippi College School of Nursing in 1976, received a master’s degree in mental health nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1978, and a doctorate in higher education and student personnel from the University of Mississippi in 1989.

Dr. Rachel began her distinguished career as a staff nurse but quickly rose to leadership positions in numerous areas of nursing. She served as the deputy director of the Mississippi Board of Nursing, executive director of the Mississippi Board of Nursing and director of nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

She impacted many nursing students as a nursing instructor at Mississippi College, the University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, Pearl River Community College and the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she ended her outstanding nursing career as the Associate Dean of academic programs at the school of nursing.

Dr. Marcia Rachel devoted 13 consecutive years serving the Mississippi Nurses Foundation scholarship committee and this scholarship, focused on leadership, is a tribute to her and her legacy in nursing.

Criteria:

  • Currently enrolled and in good academic standing in a Mississippi university MSN, DNP or PhD program;

  • Member of the Mississippi Nurses Association;

  • Copy of an official transcript showing GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • 2 Letters of Reference

  • Essay

Essay Requirements:

  • Addresses the topic: “My Role and Impact as a Leader in Education or Healthcare”

  • Previously unpublished essay;

  • Limited to 3 pages – typed and double-spaced on letter-sized paper

Complete Application Must Include:

  • Student information form;

  • Essay;

  • Official transcript showing GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • 2 Letters of Reference

  • Letter from school verifying the student is enrolled and in good academic standing.
